David Archuleta is a Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and advocate who first gained fame as the runner-up on American Idol in 2008. In June 2021, he courageously came out as queer, sharing his journey of reconciling his sexuality—with feelings spanning bisexual and demisexual identities—with his Mormon faith. He called for greater compassion and understanding among people of faith toward LGBTQ+ communities, affirming that “you can be part of the LGBTQ+ community and still believe in God”. Archuleta’s coming out prompted introspection, a departure from the LDS Church in 2022, and sparked a creative renaissance in his music. His single “Hell Together,” inspired by his experience coming out to his mother, aims to guide parents toward understanding and acceptance of LGBTQ+ children. As a visible LGBTQ+ advocate, David performs at Pride events—from LoveLoud to Utah Pride—sharing his authentic self onstage and publicly narrating his journey. His transparency about mental health, near‑suicidal struggles, and liberation resonates with many in the queer-faith space. Archuleta’s advocacy centers on affirming both spiritual and sexual identity, encouraging self-love, healing, and genuine visibility for LGBTQ+ people of faith.

Nuanua Collective’s history begins with our co-founders, Ma’afu Suliafu and Lauren To’omalatai, who hosted the very first Nuanua Collective gathering in December 2019. The duo met as volunteers in the Pacific Islander community organizing space and used their shared knowledge and experience in community building to create a space specifically for LGBTQ+ Pacific Islanders. Nuanua means “rainbow” in Samoan and calls to mind the standard rainbow associated with the LGBTQ+ community but with a Pacific Islander focus. Nuanua operates with our indigenous culture and beliefs at the forefront which includes honor our traditional sexual and gender identities as MVPFAFF+. Since that initial meeting, Nuanua has steadily grown and expanded— propelled by the belief that all of our struggles are interconnected, resulting in Nuanua not only serving as a social and support group but also service and outreach with the wider QTBIPOC community. Our collective is led by, and for, Queer and Trans People of Color. The events and initiatives that we host and partake in are all rooted in a deep love for our community and recognizing the need for spaces that are built with intention.
Over the past several years, Dallas has had the honor of advancing transgender visibility through his leadership in Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) initiatives. He created what is now the world’s largest TDOR memorial, located at the Salt Lake City and County Building every November. It's a space for collective remembrance, education, and healing. Each year, the memorial includes a candlelight vigil and name-reading ceremony to honor trans lives lost to violence. This work is deeply rooted in community. He has coordinated volunteers to help build the memorial, where each hanging flag represents a life taken too soon, bearing the individual’s name, age, brief bio, and cause of death. These tributes create a powerful emotional and visual space for reflection and action. With community support, he has raised essential funds to sustain the memorial annually. As a vocal advocate, Dallas reminds Utah’s transgender community that remembrance and visibility are not just symbolic—they are vital acts of resistance, healing, and solidarity. Every November 20, the community gathers not only to grieve, but to honor, uplift, and demand a future where trans lives are valued and protected. Dallas remains committed to this mission through grief-centered remembrance, visibility-driven advocacy, and collaborative partnerships that create spaces of healing, unity, and hope.
